So I wanted to build a report looking at Political Advertising on Google using the Google Transparency Report BigQuery dataset.

It’s an interesting data set showing the vast amounts spent on political advertising.

Below is the Google Data Studio dashboard. There are three seperate pages. The first shows the US, the second shows India and the final page shows the EU and UK. Currently these are the only three regions with data available.

Below is a screenshot showing Google Political Advertising in the United States. Notice the the amount spent by MIKE BLOOMBERG 2020 INC which is an astronomical $62 million on 64,243 creatives.

A second table in the report shows each creative. Below it shows the number for the US. You can see there are over 300 thousand of them.

If you click on the URL link you will see what the ad contained. Below is the top ad in the image above for Mike Bloomberg’s 2020 election campaign.

Below is an image ad from the Civic Coalition political party in Poland. It is from the data the European Union and United Kingdom.

You can also take a look at some of the data on the Google Transparency report website. It gives some context to the data and purpose of making it public. They also have a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the data.

The BigQuery public dataset

This Advertising data is available on Google BigQuery in the Public Datasets.

You can access it using the BigQuery data connector in Google Data Studio.
