How to create a Weekly Users Dashboard in Google Data Studio

In this post I’ll be showing how to build a Weekly Users dashboard in Google Data Studio.

The goal is to show how many users visit your website on any day of the week, and at what time of day they visit.

The dashboard is below, followed by instructions on how to build it.

Creating a Day of Week bar chart

The first step in building a Weekly Users Dashboard is to create a bar chart showing how many Users visit your website on what day of the week.

Firstly click ‘Add a chart’ and choose Bar > Column chart.

Once we’ve created our bar chart, we need to change the chart settings to the following;

  • Dimension = Day of Week
  • Metric = Users
  • Sort = Day of Week (Ascending)

You can also select ‘Apply filter’ under ‘Interactions. This will allow us to filter by day of the Week, simply by clicking on the column.

For example, we can click on the Thursday column (as seen below) and it will filter the rest of the data in the report.

Creating an Hour bar chart

The next step is to create another bar chart. This time, we will set up the Data as the following;

  • Dimension = Hour
  • Metric = Users
  • Sort = Hour (Ascending)

We now have a graph that shows us the most popular time of day for Users to visit your website.

Creating a Day of Week / Hour Pivot Table

We’ll add one more chart to this dashboard, and that will be a Pivot Table. It will show the number of Users for each hour of the day for each day of the week.

We will add a chart and choose ‘Pivot Table with Heatmap’.

We can set up the pivot table in the following way;

  • Row dimension = Hour
  • Column dimension = Day of Week
  • Metric = Users

We also need to set up the pivot table sorting in the following way;

  • Row #1 = Hour (Ascending)
  • Colum #1 = Day of Week (Ascending)

Since we’ve chosen the Heatmap option for our Pivot table, we can open the Style tab on the right and choose the colour we’d like our metric to display.

And then we have our pivot chart showing both the hour and day of the week when Users visit your website!
